Morten Toft Rasmussen

Senior Analyst

When Morten graduated from his Economics degree in 2019, he left university with several unanswered questions: "Why did we never learn to model CO2 emissions? What about deforestation and plastic pollution in the oceans? Why do economists wield such significant political power when it concerns social and environmental questions? And why is GDP growth so often equated for social progress?"

Morten’s career path has taken him through the business and financial sectors, while these questions—mirroring the challenges facing the planet—have only grown larger and more pressing. Inspired by thinkers such as Kate Raworth, Morten chose to change direction and dedicate himself to work with wellbeing economy.

He graduated from Aarhus University's IMSQE program, an elite program for economics students, with macroeconomics as his primary field of interest. Morten began his career as a management consultant at Boston Consulting Group, where he worked with several C20 companies. Later he entered Aarhus' power trading industry as a quantitative analyst at MFT Energy. Alongside his professional work, Morten has been involved in sustainable energy projects in Kenya and, as a member of the Unleash network, has worked on several projects related to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.

Morten is part of WELA’s analytical engine room, where his primary focus lies in quantitative analyses. His work centers on modeling the complex interactions between the economy, nature, and human well-being. As an expert in system dynamics modeling, he is responsible for the ongoing development and operation of WELA's wellbeing economy macro model. Additionally, he closely follows developments in the macroeconomic debate.

Outside of his professional life, Morten enjoys playing football and squash and has a deep appreciation for nature. Among his many adventures, he has hiked for 38 days through the Andes with his donkey, Holger Danske, and constructed a raft in China using only his Swiss Army knife. Furthermore, Morten volunteers with the Red Cross, where he serves as a mentor for former inmates.
